Sublime Chant: The Scotland Project

Kitty Cleveland graces us with 17 Gregorian chants from the patrimony of the ancient Church. Whether or not you understand Latin or are even a Christian, this music speaks to the soul and has a calming, meditative effect on the listener. The singing was recorded by the artist herself without accompaniment in the 14th c. Dunblane Cathedral in Scotland. After returning to the States, she collaborated with David Smith to add ethereal, Enya-like arrangements to her singing. What results is nothing short of miraculous. For many, it has become their favorite chant CD. "This project resulted from the confluence of repeated requests from my fans for a chant CD with a request from an old friend to sing at her wedding in Scotland," shares Ms. Cleveland. "I told my producer that I couldn't imagine recording chant in a studio, but I could definitely see it happening in a gorgeous old cathedral. It was really a crazy experiment--not only in learning and singing chant for the first time--but figuring out how to record myself! I listened to chant CDs on the flight over as I read the manual for my recording equipment. Never did I imagine that it would become for many the favorite CD out of my eight." Gregorian chant is traditionally sung my monastic choirs, most often men, so this CD is unique in the genre given the solo female voice. This CD will be a unique addition to any collection of chant or meditative music.
