Meyerbeers grandiose Le Prophète was recorded by CBS in London in 1976 under conductor Henry Lewis. The stellar cast, including Renata Scotto and James McCracken, is headed by the incomparable Marilyn Horne as Fides. As Gramophone wrote: The role calls for a Brünnhilde range with an Amneris-type voice: the vocal flexibility and dramatic punch needed are extraordinary. Miss Horne has them all, and she brings out the pathos of the part without sentimentalizing it The RPO pay much attention to Meyerbeers highly piquant, often quirky orchestration.
