CLAUDE DEBUSSY CENTENARY EDITION
Claude Debussy was one of the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism and the formal fluidity of his music with its delicately-etched sonorities and subtle harmonies established him as one of the most progressive and influential musical voices of his time. His own unique musical style was influenced by his interest in literature and visual art. The poet Stéphane Mallarmé for example was a major influence, talking of "a 'musicalization' of poetry" – Debussy drew directly from his poem "L'après-midi d'un faune". Debussy’s work cannot be judged on the musical level alone: As Paul Dukas put it: “One must seek the poetry in his work.”
