London-based American-born soprano Lucy Schaufer FIRST solo recording

Lucy Schaufer is a vocal shape-shifter, and of an altogether tantalising, alluring and aurally enriching sort. A product of the small-town America that gives this solo CD its title (Carpentersville refers to Lucy's hometown, just outside of Chicago). The stirring eclectisim on this recording is cohesively pulled together by Lucy's vocal versatility and her desire to wed the language of song and story-telling together, reflecting a musical journey that casts one eye on Schaufer's roots while keeping her artistry moving ever onward. The range of repertoire here Bach to Bernstein and McBroom to Guettel, is as broad as her stage career to date.

A project steeped with affection for her late father that at the same time pays homage to Schaufer's
musical influences, past and present. From Marc Blitzstein to Michele Brourman, from modern composer Stewart Wallace to the 1950s cabaret singer Ruth Wallis, Schaufer's material covers the American waterfront and encompasses key theatre works of the last 60 years starting with Bernstein's Wonderful Town finishing with Adam Guettel's Tony Award winning Broadway hit The Light in the Piazza.

Classically trained, Schaufer points to the importance of material that is 'deeply embedded in the language of song and story-telling'. Small wonder, then, that she is drawn to the humanity and longing conjured by Leonard Bernstein in 'Dream With Me', from Peter Pan, 'Lazy Summer Days' from
Stewart Wallace's provocative American opera Hopper's Wife, to the arresting 'Errol Flynn' with words by Amanda McBroom (of 'The Rose' fame), who on hearing the recording commented 'I want to lie down and roll in your low notes! Such a beautiful rendition.'
'The voices heard in these songs', Schaufer says, 'are women telling their stories of love, hope, humour, worries and woes from the simplicity of childhood dreams to the shattering acceptance of life's limitations.'

English National Opera/Young Vic (Elegy for Young Lovers)

Royal Opera House (The Knot Garden)
'Lucy Schaufer so good in ENO's On the Town is terrific here: great presence and real engagement against the odds.' - The Independent

English National Opera (On The Town)

Long Beach Opera (Hopper's Wife)
'Schaufer was extraordinary as Ava, vocally and physically. She sang a difficult aria splendidly standing nude in a bubble bath, which deserves a place in the operatic hall of fame.' - The Orange County Register
