Manufacturer Description
This 6CD set is devoted to recordings made in the 1990s by leading Danish organist Ulrik Spang-Hanssen of music by the great Dutch baroque composer Dietrich Buxtehude. The pieces featured were written for the major religious festivals of the church year. They are performed on some of the greatest instruments in Europe, organs built by Schnitger, Aubertin, Lund and Raphaelis, in Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. In 1705 none other than the young Johann Sebastian Bach left his duties at Arnstadt to undertake a pilgrimage to Lbeck in order to watch his idol, the Dutch composer Dietrich Buxtehude, at work. On his own initiative he extended his educational leave to four months thereby putting his job at risk. During this time he prepared numerous copies of Buxtehude's works and studied them meticulously. Personnel: Ulrik Spang-Hanssen (organ) Organs built by Schnitger, Aubertin, Lund and Raphaelis in Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.
